Comparison of bimetallic and trimetallic catalyst in reductive dechlorination; influence of copper addition

چکیده
Efficiency of reduction of PCBs in aqueous solution was examined with the help of bimetallic catalyst Fe-C/Pd consisting of palladized grey cast iron and with a newly designed trimetallic catalyst (Cu-Fe-C/Pd) consisting of a copper metal plate with embodied microparticles of palladized grey iron (bimetallic catalyst). PCB solutions were prepared using DELOR 103. The trimetallic catalyst was significantly more efficient than bimetallic one. Trimetallic catalyst reduced concentration of PCBs to approximately 1% of its initial value during 70 minutes and bimetallic one during 48 hours. Moreover, more than 20% of declined PCBs were found adsorbed on the surfaces of the bimetallic catalysts. Contrary, presence of metal copper accelerates formation of the oxidation products and their release from the catalyst surface as the individual flocks which recovers activity of the trimetallic catalyst. These facts can significantly change the previous belief, widely published for decades that the reductive dechlorination of PCBs is the only decisive control step in the reduction of their content in water by zero valence metals. Reductive Remediation of Pollutants Using Metals
Metal systems have been extensively used for the abiotic remediation of recalcitrant pollutants. Zero-valent metals such as iron (Fe 0 ), zinc (Zn 0 ), magnesium (Mg 0 ) have been used for the reductive dechlorination of organic compounds Nanoscale zero-valent iron particles have been reported to be very effective for the transformation and detoxification of a wide variety of contaminants, such...

Bimetallic nanostructured core-shell structures are commonly used as catalysts in a wide variety of reactions. We surmised that the addition of an additional metal would potentially allow catalytic tailoring with the possibility of an increase in activity. Here a tri-metallic catalytic structure, consisting of clustered catalytic Pt on the surface of a Pd shell supported on a rod shaped Au core...
متن کاملEffects of key reaction parameters on the reductive dechlorination of chloroform with Pd/Fe0 bimetal in aqueous solution.
In this study, bimetallic Pd/Fe(0) particles were synthesized and employed to reduce chloroform in aqueous solution. The investigation emphasized on the effects of some key reaction parameters including Pd/Fe(0) dosage, pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and presence of anions on the reductive dechlorination reaction. The experimental results showed that high Pd/Fe(0) dosage, low initial p...

Zero-valent aluminum based trimetallic particles comprising a combination of catalytically effective amounts (1 wt%) of palladium and zero-valent iron on the aluminum surface were synthesized and tested for the dechlorination of chlorinated methanes in batch reactors. XRD analysis indicated the trimetallic particles present in zero-valent form of all three components. Trimetallic Pd/Fe/Al parti...
متن کاملDechlorination of trichloroethylene in aqueous solution by noble metal-modified iron.
Bimetallic particles are extremely interesting in accelerating the dechlorination of chlorinated organics. Four noble metals (Pd, Pt, Ru and Au), separately deposited onto the iron surface through a spontaneous redox process, promoted the TCE dechlorination rate, and the catalytic activity of the noble metal followed the order of Pd>>Ru>Pt>Au. This order was found to be dependent on the concent...
